Case Study: How a Shopify Store Lifted Conversion 22% With Clean Cutouts

A Shopify home-goods store selling ceramics, linens, and small furniture came to us with a common complaint: traffic was fine, but conversion had been flat for a year. The catalog had 240 SKUs, mostly lifestyle photos with busy backgrounds. We ran a controlled test.

The setup

We split the catalog into two groups of 120 SKUs each. Group A kept their existing lifestyle photos. Group B had every hero image replaced with a clean cutout on a soft-grey studio backdrop, plus one lifestyle photo further down the product page. Everything else (copy, price, reviews) stayed identical.

Before and after — lifestyle photo to clean cutout
The hero image swap: cluttered lifestyle shot → clean studio-backdrop cutout.

Results after 6 weeks

Group B (clean cutouts) saw a 22% lift in checkout conversion vs Group A. Time-on-page dropped 8% (people made decisions faster). Add-to-cart rate rose 14%. Return rates were unchanged. Cross-checked against the previous quarter to rule out seasonality — the effect held.

Why did it work?

Three reasons emerged from the analytics: 1) Shoppers scanning grids can compare products faster when the visual noise is stripped away. 2) The consistent soft-grey backdrop made the whole catalog feel like a curated brand — not a marketplace. 3) Mobile users (68% of traffic) especially benefit — thumbnails on small screens are unreadable when the background competes for attention.

The workflow they used

One team member spent an afternoon batch-uploading all 120 products to Clearpic (5 at a time in parallel, 240 photos in about 25 minutes). Downloaded the ZIP. Chose the Soft Grey studio backdrop for consistency. Uploaded the new hero images to Shopify. Total workflow: half a day for one person.

What did not move the needle

Pure-white backgrounds actually performed slightly worse than soft grey — too clinical for a home-goods brand. Dark studio backdrops looked premium but hurt conversion on inexpensive items. The lesson: pick a backdrop that matches your price point and brand voice, not just what looks good in isolation.

Steal this playbook

1) Pick one consistent studio backdrop for your entire hero-image set. 2) Keep lifestyle photos on the product page — just not as the hero. 3) Batch-process your whole catalog in one afternoon. 4) A/B test if you can. 5) Give it 4-6 weeks before judging — conversion metrics need volume to stabilize.
